Salute to HERstory:
Ethel Hedgemon Lyle’s Legacy
The 92nd NARC began with a pilgrimage to Mount Lawn Cemetery in Sharon Hills, Pennsylvania, to pay homage to our beloved guiding light, Soror Ethel Hedgemon Lyle. Soror Ethel made Philadelphia her home by the 1920s and left an enduring legacy that lives on today. Madam Regional Director, our 29th Supreme Basileus, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, and sorors joined the Lyle family, including Soror Chantél Harris, her great-great- granddaughter, for a special wreath-laying. From the wreath-laying ceremony, sorors and the Lyle family journeyed to Soror Ethel's home on 53rd Street in West Philadelphia to unveil Ethel Hedgemon Lyle Way. Hear the heartfelt remarks from Beverly Holmes, a long-time resident of 53rd Street and neighbor of our beloved Founder.
“Philadelphia holds a special spot in the hearts of many Alpha Kappa Alpha women. This city was where our moving spirit and principal founder lived, taught, served, and led. We know that she hovers above us."
Soror Elicia Pegues Spearman, Esq 6
