Letters from the Editors

"Black women have been visionaries and movement builders whose trajectories have disrupted and confronted oppression, reclaimed humanity, and championed the rights of African Americans. Our beloved Founder, Ethel Hedgemon Lyle, defined the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha as “...a response to the great need of the Negro people.”  The legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has been reclaimed, refreshed, and preserved through generations of freedom dreamers and torchbearers from Washington, D.C. to Maine. For 115 years, the North Atlantic Region has upheld the vision of supreme service and sisterhood. “A Legacy in Perpetuity” celebrates how our region continues to answer the call and celebrates how we will continue to uphold the vision for another 115 years, and beyond. Join us in keeping the legacy alive by sharing your stories and milestones for future issues!

Soror Brittney L. Yancy, Editor-in-Chief

"Our contributions as women of color on American soil, and as members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, must be told to combat the current regime of erasure within our educational institutions, and beyond. As archivists and preservationists, through the use of story and modern lenses of technology, it is with the utmost intention that our organization and members maintain their place in history as griots for future generations. The foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to be firmly planted in sisterhood and service, a legacy that can never be uprooted.
