Globally EmpowHERd:
A F.I.R.S.T. Response
Alpha Kappa Alpha women have always been a force for change. Across the globe, our sorority has been at the forefront of movements advocating for social justice, human rights, environmental sustainability, and economic equality. For 116 years, our efforts have always addressed the needs of our communities, and with the generations, we have recommitted ourselves to building resilient communities through globally relevant action. This issue spotlights the incredible work of the Notable North Atlantic sorors who are making a difference in their communities and beyond.
"...Any time women come together with a collective intention...it's a powerful thing... magic happens."
- Soror Phylicia Rashad
Introducing...
Elicia Pegues Spearman, Esq.
Chief Executive Officer

One of the greatest gifts of being a Girl Scout is the sisterhood, as articulated in our Girl Scouts Law: “…be a sister to every Girl Scout.” The inspiring mission of the Girl Scouts of Connecticut is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place, aligns seamlessly with my vision to champion the needs and address the conditions of women and girls across Connecticut and beyond. As I embark on this new venture, I am guided by my decades-long commitment to meet the needs of women and girls, as well as our global community.

Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish." - Michelle Obama, Former First Lady of the United States of America
As Girl Scouts, you bear the responsibility to serve with empathy and purpose. Like Alpha Kappa Alpha sorors, Girl Scouts encourage girls to inspire others to be their best selves. Women who inspire me include Michelle Obama, Serena Williams, and Queen Latifah - women who are global ambassadors on behalf of women and girls. While their influence continues to be felt around the globe, I take pride in sharing that these global agents are also Girl Scouts and have taken the Girl Scouts Promise.
The invaluable lessons I have gleaned over my 40 years in Alpha Kappa Alpha have prepared me for this next chapter; to inspire the next generation of movement makers, change agents, and global ambassadors.
