The F.I.R.S.T. Edition
Letters from the Editors

The F.I.R.S.T. on the Yard issue is an ode to our undergraduates of the North Atlantic Region. This issue takes me back to my “Home By The Sea,” Hampton University, where I was initiated into the Gorgeous and Talented Gamma Theta Chapter in Spring 2002. The unbreAKAble bonds of sisterhood, memories of chilling on the Smiley Face and hosting award-winning programs in the Hampton community, and reverence for the Gamma Theta legacy, have anchored me in my 21-year journey in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The birthplace of Alpha Kappa Alpha begins with sixteen undergraduates with a vision. The F.I.R.S.T. on the Yard celebrates how our NAR undergraduate chapters have honored the Founders’ vision and SOARed to Greater Heights by putting sisterhood, scholarship, and service FIRST!

Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, NC - one of the only two HBCU's for women in the world - played an integral part of my development. She planted a seed of thought that I could achieve past any limitations, whether internally perceived or externally projected. On her grounds I witnessed FIRST-hand - women of color who were pioneers, ground-breakers, and world changers. These dynamic women were my professors, my colleagues, and my mentors - all personally and equally invested in the vision that I, too, could walk (and fly) among them while beholding to the expectation that I excel above and beyond. Similarly, the undergraduate journey is a delicate and sacred balance of expectation, inspiration and determination. Becoming a Bennett Belle prepared me for such a time as this; to do the work of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. As we reflect on the shoulders from which we stand, within the pages of this undergraduate issue, "May we never smirch the good, gendered here in sisterhood".
